Remote Online Notarization (RON)
Remote Online Notarization is a process that allows mortgage closing documents to be signed and notarized electronically through a secure video conference, without requiring the borrower to be physically present.
During a RON closing, a licensed notary verifies the signer's identity through knowledge-based authentication and government ID verification, then witnesses the signing in real time over a recorded video session. The documents are sealed with a digital notary stamp.
RON is not available in every state or for every loan type. Louisiana permits remote online notarization, and it has become an increasingly common option — especially for borrowers who are relocating during a PCS move, deployed, or unable to attend an in-person closing. It can be an alternative to using a Power of Attorney at closing. See our guide on the closing process in Louisiana for more.
Why This Matters: RON gives you flexibility to close from anywhere — your living room, a hotel during a PCS move, or even overseas. If your schedule or location makes an in-person closing difficult, ask your lender whether RON is an option for your transaction.
Common question
Can I close on my mortgage remotely?
In many cases, yes. Remote Online Notarization allows you to sign and notarize closing documents over a secure video call. Louisiana permits RON, but not every lender or loan type supports it — ask your loan officer.
Is remote notarization secure?
Yes. RON uses identity verification, knowledge-based authentication, and a recorded video session. The notary verifies your identity live before witnessing the signing. Documents receive a tamper-evident digital seal.
