Verification of Employment (VOE)

Verification of Employment is the process by which a lender confirms a borrower's current employment status, job title, income, and length of employment directly with the employer.

VOE is a standard part of mortgage underwriting and may be conducted verbally, electronically, or through a written form. Lenders typically verify employment at the time of application and again shortly before closing to ensure nothing has changed.

A VOE is not the same as pay stubs or tax returns. It is an independent confirmation from the employer that validates the information you provided on your application. Gaps in employment, recent job changes, or pending start dates may require additional documentation.

Why This Matters: Employment verification is one of the final steps before closing. Changing jobs, reducing hours, or leaving employment during the loan process can jeopardize your approval. Keeping your employment stable through closing is critical.
